01 · Context

The setting

In Malawi’s higher-education context, certificate checks involve graduates, institutions and people who need to verify a qualification. The verification journey should work for each of those stakeholders.

02 · Problem

What the system needs to solve

A paper certificate alone makes remote checks difficult. A digital flow needs to connect the document to a clear verification result while respecting the responsibilities of the issuing institution.

03 · Approach

Make the workflow clear

Treat the certificate as a document with a verifiable reference. Connect document processing and issuance to a QR/barcode lookup, and make the verification result understandable to the person checking it.

04 · Architecture / workflow

A view of the system in motion.

A project-level workflow based on the documented scope.

  1. 01Institution prepares record
  2. 02Document is processed
  3. 03Certificate receives QR/barcode
  4. 04Verifier scans reference
  5. 05System returns verification

05 · Technical implementation

What the implementation covers.

  • Project scope includes document processing, QR/barcode verification, stakeholder workflows, backend/API architecture and frontend implementation.
  • The decentralized verification concept is presented alongside the practical issuance and checking workflow.

06 · Key decisions

Designing for the system, not just the screen.

These notes focus on system-level decisions; undocumented implementation and deployment details are not inferred.

  • Make the verification path usable from the certificate itself, without requiring the verifier to understand the underlying technology.
  • Keep the issuing institution and certificate record central to the trust model.
  • Describe decentralization as the verification concept; do not imply a specific ledger or consensus implementation where one is not documented.

07 · Outcome / status

What this work demonstrates

A system-design case study focused on making academic certificate checks clearer and more accessible across institutional boundaries.
